What Happens at a Pigmentation Consultation? How We Assess Your Skin Before Treatment
If you’ve been thinking about laser pigmentation removal Cheadle clinics offer, the first appointment is the most important one. It is not a sales pitch. It is where we work out what is actually going on in your skin, whether laser treatment is right for you, and what a realistic plan looks like. Here is exactly what to expect at Angel Skin Lab.

Why the Assessment Matters More Than the Laser
Melasma, sun spots, freckles and old sunburn marks can look similar at a glance. Underneath, they behave very differently. Treating them all the same way would give unpredictable results.
That is why we never quote a number of sessions without first looking at your skin. A proper assessment protects your results and your skin.

Step One: Your History
We will also ask about sun exposure, previous treatments, and the skincare products you use now. Some medications and active ingredients make skin more sensitive to light, so it helps to know about them early.
Be as open as you can. There are no wrong answers, and every detail helps us plan safely.
Step Two: Looking Closely at the Pigmentation
Next we look at the pigmentation itself, and several things tell us a lot:
- Pattern: symmetrical patches across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip often suggest melasma, while scattered, well-defined spots suggest sun damage or freckles.
- Edges: sharply defined edges and soft, blurred edges can point to different types of pigmentation.
- Colour: light brown, dark brown and grey-brown tones can indicate how deep the pigment sits.
- Location: the face, hands, chest and shoulders all respond a little differently.
Step Three: Your Skin Tone and Suitability
This is especially important for medium and deeper skin tones.
We also check whether your skin is suitable for treatment right now. Recently tanned or sunburnt skin, active irritation, or certain medications may mean we ask you to wait. Waiting is not a rejection. It simply gives you a safer and better outcome.
Step Four: Checking Nothing Needs a Doctor First
This part is important. Laser pigmentation treatment is for harmless pigmentation. If a mark is new, changing in shape or colour, itchy, bleeding, raised, or simply looks unusual, we will recommend you have it checked by your GP or a dermatologist before any treatment. Lasers should never be used on a mark that hasn’t been properly identified.
This is about your safety, and a responsible clinic will always raise it.
Step Five: A Realistic Plan
Once we understand your skin, we talk through the plan honestly. We use pico laser technology, which delivers very short pulses of energy to break pigment into smaller fragments that the body then clears naturally. Results build gradually over a course of sessions, spaced weeks apart.
We will explain what is likely for your type of pigmentation:
- Sun spots, age spots and freckles often respond predictably.
- Melasma tends to be more stubborn and may return, because hormones and sunlight keep acting on the skin. The British Skin Foundation’s patient information on melasma explains that melasma is usually managed rather than cured, which is why we are always upfront about it.
- Daily SPF is part of the plan for every type. Treatment without sun protection is a bit like mopping the floor with the tap still running.
We will also give you a realistic idea of the number of sessions and what to do between appointments.
Questions Worth Bringing With You
Come with anything on your mind. These are common ones:
- How many sessions might I need?
- What will my skin look like straight after treatment?
- Which products should I stop using beforehand?
- How do I protect my results long term?
- Is there anything about my skin that needs a doctor’s opinion first?
No Pressure, Just Clarity
You don’t need to book treatment on the day. Many people take time to think it over, and that is completely fine. What matters is that you leave with a clear understanding of your skin and your options.
