Pigmentation: What You Can Control (and What You Can’t)

Pigmentation: What’s Actually Within Your Control

It’s tempting to think of pigmentation as either entirely your fault (too much sun, not enough SPF) or entirely out of your hands (just genetics, just hormones). The reality sits somewhere in between — and understanding which parts you can influence makes treatment far more effective.

What You Can’t Control

Genetics. Freckles, and your general tendency to develop pigmentation, are largely written into your DNA. Some people simply pigment more easily than others, regardless of lifestyle.

Hormonal changes. Melasma and chloasma are triggered by hormonal shifts — pregnancy, contraceptive use, hormone therapy — that aren’t something you can simply choose to avoid if you need or want those treatments for other reasons.

Past sun exposure. Sunburns from years ago, or sun exposure before you knew better, are already baked into your skin’s history. You can’t undo the past, only manage what happens from here.

What You Can Control

Ongoing sun protection. Daily SPF, reapplied consistently, is the single biggest factor in whether pigmentation gets worse or whether treatment results last. This applies whether you’re dealing with melasma, sun spots, or freckles.

Consistency with treatment. Pico laser treatment breaks pigment down gradually, and sticking to your recommended session schedule — rather than skipping or delaying — makes a real difference to how well and how quickly pigmentation fades.

Managing known triggers. For melasma in particular, being aware of what worsens it (sun exposure, heat, certain hormonal factors) and adjusting where realistically possible can help maintain results for longer.

Why This Distinction Matters for Treatment

Understanding what’s controllable versus what isn’t helps set realistic expectations. Sun spots, age spots, and freckles — driven mostly by cumulative sun exposure and genetics — tend to respond predictably to pico laser treatment. Melasma, being more hormonally driven, can be more stubborn and prone to returning, which is why ongoing sun protection matters so much alongside treatment itself.

Treatment Works With You, Not Instead of You

Pico laser treatment does the heavy lifting of breaking down existing pigment, but it works best as part of a bigger picture that includes consistent sun protection and realistic expectations about your specific type of pigmentation. Neither element alone tells the full story.

Getting a Clear Picture

A consultation is the best way to understand which category your pigmentation falls into, and what a realistic combination of treatment and daily habits would look like for you specifically.

Angel is amazing, and truly an artist. You can tell that she really enjoys what she is doing. When I came I had issues with the shape of my brows due to overplucking when I was younger. You can’t even tell now. Thank you for your work ♡
