A Colour-by-Colour Guide to Tattoo Removal: What to Expect From Every Shade

Tattoo removal is often described as if every tattoo behaves the same way. In reality, the colours in your design make a big difference to how treatment goes. A black script tattoo and a bright, multi-coloured sleeve are two very different projects. If you’re researching coloured tattoo removal Cheadle clinics offer, this guide explains how each colour typically behaves, why, and how to set honest expectations before you start.

Why Colour Matters

A laser works because the ink in your skin absorbs its light. The ink particles are shattered into much smaller fragments, and your body then clears them away over the following weeks. The catch is that different colours absorb different wavelengths of light. A colour that absorbs light well responds well. A colour that reflects the light, or absorbs it poorly, is harder to break down.

That is why one laser setting rarely clears every colour in a design, and why multi-coloured tattoos usually take longer than simple dark ones. At Angel Skin Lab we use a pico laser, and Angel will tell you honestly at your consultation which colours in your tattoo are likely to respond and which may be more stubborn.

The Colours, One by One

These are general patterns, not promises. Your skin, the ink’s brand, its depth and the age of the tattoo all affect the result.

Colour Usual response
Black Usually the most responsive, because it absorbs a wide range of light
Dark blue Often responds well
Dark green Can respond, but often needs more sessions
Red Often responds, though some red inks can be unpredictable
Purple and violet Variable, and can be slower
Brown Often responds, but ink composition varies
Light blue and turquoise Can be stubborn
Bright green Can be stubborn
Yellow Often one of the hardest, because it is pale
White Hard to treat, and can behave unpredictably
Flesh and skin-toned inks Can behave unexpectedly, and need careful assessment

Black and Dark Inks

Black and very dark blue are the easiest colours to treat. They absorb light well, so older and well-faded black tattoos often clear the fastest. That doesn’t mean a dense, heavily packed black tattoo is quick. Ink depth and density still matter.

Reds, Browns and Purples

These can respond well, but results are less predictable. Reds and browns are used in a huge range of formulas, and some respond readily while others linger. Purple and violet shades vary, and sometimes only partially fade.

Greens, Light Blues and Turquoise

Greens and light blues are known for being stubborn. They may need more sessions, and sometimes they leave a faint ghost of the design. Pico technology can help with these colours, but no clinic should promise it will clear them completely.

Yellow and White

Pale inks absorb very little light, so they are the hardest to target. They also tend to blend into the skin visually, which can make progress hard to judge. White ink needs particular care, as we’ll explain next.

Why Some Light Inks Can Darken

This one surprises people. An NHS laser centre notes that some light-coloured inks can darken after laser treatment, and that this may be temporary or permanent. It doesn’t happen with every tattoo, but it is a recognised risk, particularly with pale, white and flesh-toned inks, and it is one of the main reasons we assess your tattoo carefully before treating it. nbt

Cosmetic Tattoos and Permanent Makeup

If you have semi-permanent makeup, such as brows, lips or eyeliner, please tell us before any laser treatment. Some cosmetic pigments contain ingredients that can darken when exposed to laser light, and the area is delicate. Never assume it is safe, and don’t have laser treatment over cosmetic tattoos without a proper consultation first.

Can Every Colour Be Removed?

Honesty matters here. The NHS laser centre states that some tattoos clear completely, but it is never possible to guarantee 100% removal. Dark, older, well-faded tattoos often do very well. Dense, bright, multi-coloured and new tattoos are harder. Some clients are delighted with a significant fade even if a trace remains, and others want complete clearance and need to be prepared that it might not happen. nbt

How Many Sessions for a Coloured Tattoo?

There is no honest single number. As a guide, one NHS laser centre suggests professional tattoos may need around 10 to 12 sessions. Coloured tattoos can need more, particularly where pale shades are involved. Sessions are spaced several weeks apart to give your skin time to heal and your body time to clear the ink. Angel will give you an estimate after looking at your tattoo, and she will update it as the course progresses. nbt

Fading for a Cover-Up

You may not need every colour gone. If you’re planning a cover-up, lightening the darker or denser parts of the old design can give your tattoo artist far more freedom. Bring a reference image of the new design, and talk to your artist about how much fading they need.

Skin Tone and Safety

Laser energy can also be absorbed by your natural skin pigment, so settings have to be chosen carefully, particularly for medium and deeper skin tones. A test patch may be recommended to see how your skin and ink respond before treating the whole tattoo.

The NHS laser centre advises that side-effects are more common if the skin is tanned when treated, and recommends against tattoo removal laser treatment during pregnancy. We’ll also ask you to wait if you have sunburn, a fresh tan, fake tan, an active skin infection, open skin in the area or a health condition or medication that affects healing. Please tell us about anything relevant. nbt

Aftercare

  • Keep the area clean, and pat it dry without rubbing.
  • Don’t pick or peel any scabbing or blisters.
  • Protect the skin from the sun, and use SPF once it has healed enough to apply it.
  • Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas and soaking baths until it has healed.
  • Wear loose clothing over the area.
  • Contact us if anything worries you.

  • Is there a risk of darkening with any of my inks?
  • How many sessions might I need, and how often?

Angel is amazing, and truly an artist. You can tell that she really enjoys what she is doing. When I came I had issues with the shape of my brows due to overplucking when I was younger. You can’t even tell now. Thank you for your work ♡
