Facial Laser Hair Removal, Area by Area: Upper Lip, Chin, Jawline and More
Facial hair affects people differently. For some it is a few stubborn chin hairs, for others it is a shadow along the jaw or a regular upper lip routine of waxing, threading or shaving. If you’re looking into clinics offer, it helps to know how each area behaves, what to expect from treatment, and how to prepare. This guide covers it area by area.
How Laser Hair Removal Works on the Face
A diode laser sends light into the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs the energy, which damages the follicle and reduces regrowth over a course of sessions. The laser only works on hair that is actively growing at the time of your appointment, so one visit can’t treat everything. That is why courses are spaced out, giving hairs that were resting time to move into their growth phase.
At Angel Skin Lab we use a diode laser for hair removal, and every plan is set up around your skin tone, hair type and the area being treated.</p>
Upper Lip
The upper lip is the most requested facial area, and it is small and quick to treat. It is also a spot where regular waxing and threading can cause redness, irritation and ingrown hairs, so many clients are keen to stop. The skin here is delicate, so settings are chosen carefully and we check how your skin responds as the course goes on.
Chin
Chin hair is often a few coarse, dark hairs that return quickly, and it is one of the areas where clients tend to notice progress most clearly. If the hairs are very pale, fine or grey, they may respond less well, which we will explain honestly at your consultation.
Jawline and Sideburns
Treating the jawline, sideburns and cheeks can soften shadowing and reduce the need for frequent shaving. These are slightly larger areas, so sessions take a bit longer. For clients who want a cleaner finish without daily upkeep, this is a popular choice.
Neck and Beard Line
Many men book the neckline and cheek line to keep a beard looking sharp, and some women treat the neck. Hair here can be dense and prone to ingrown hairs from shaving, so reducing it can make skin feel calmer. If you’d like a full beard removed, or only the edges tidied up, tell us at your consultation so the plan matches your goal.
What Hair and Skin Types Respond Best
Laser works best when there is a good contrast between the hair and the skin, and when hair is dark. One NHS laser centre notes that laser treatment doesn’t work on white or blonde hair, because there isn’t enough pigment for the laser to target. Modern diode technology can be used on a wide range of skin tones, but settings need careful calibration for deeper skin, which is why an assessment before treatment matters. nbt
Hormones and Facial Hair
Facial hair can be influenced by hormones, genetics, age and certain medications. If you notice sudden or heavy new growth, it’s sensible to mention it to your GP, because it can sometimes point to an underlying cause. Laser treatment can still reduce hair in these cases, but you may need more sessions or occasional top-ups. The same NHS centre notes that many patients have top-up treatments once or twice a year to keep hair well controlled. nbt
How to Prepare for Your Session
- Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your appointment, unless we ask you to do something different.
- Don’t wax, thread, pluck or use hair removal cream. One NHS laser centre advises that you can shave or trim between treatments, but should not wax, pluck or use depilatory creams. nbt
- Avoid sunbeds, sunburn and fake tan on your face before treatment.
- Arrive with clean skin. Skip make-up, moisturiser, fragrance and heavy skincare on the area.
- Pause strong actives such as retinol and exfoliating acids around your treatment days.
- Tell us about medication and any changes to your health.
What a Session Feels Like
Most clients describe a quick snapping or warm prickling feeling, a bit like an elastic band flick. Facial sessions are short. Afterwards the skin can look slightly pink and feel warm, like mild sunburn, and the tiny hair follicles may look a little raised. This normally settles within a day or so.
Aftercare for Facial Skin
Your face is exposed every day, so protection matters.
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily and avoid direct sun. Skin is more sensitive to the sun after laser hair removal. bewell
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for a day or two.
- Skip make-up until any redness has settled, or use mineral make-up if you need to cover up.
- Moisturise with something gentle and fragrance-free.
- Don’t scratch, pick or exfoliate harshly.
- Let treated hairs shed naturally over the following one to three weeks. They can look like regrowth, but they are on their way out.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
It depends on your hair, skin, hormones and the area. Facial hair often cycles faster than body hair, so sessions are usually spaced more closely, and most people need a course followed by occasional maintenance. Angel will give you an honest estimate at your consultation, based on what she sees, and not a one-size-fits-all number.
Shaving, Waxing and Threading vs Laser
Waxing and threading give a smooth result for a few weeks, but hair returns, and the repeated pulling can irritate delicate facial skin. Shaving is quick but needs doing often, and some people notice stubble within a day. Laser requires a larger commitment upfront, but it aims to reduce how much hair grows back over time, so you spend less time on upkeep.
Is It Right for You?
Your consultation is where you find out. Angel will look at your hair colour and thickness, your skin tone, your skin’s recent sun exposure and your health history. If laser isn’t a good match, for example because the hair is too pale, she will tell you honestly rather than sell you a course.
