Your Week-by-Week Guide to the Time Between Laser Hair Removal Sessions
Your appointment lasts a short time, but the weeks between sessions are where much of the work happens. If you’re having clinics provide, knowing what to expect and what to do at each stage makes the whole course feel calmer and more predictable. Here is a practical, week-by-week guide. This article will discuss what to expect with both at the beginning and at the closing stage of your treatment.
Why the Gap Between Sessions Matters
Hair doesn’t all grow at once. Each hair moves through its own cycle of growing, transitioning and resting, and the laser can only act on hair that is actively growing when you’re treated. That is why courses are spaced out rather than done back to back. The NHS-linked guidance gives an example of sessions about every 4 weeks for facial hair and every 6 to 8 weeks for body hair. Your own plan at Angel Skin Lab will be tailored to your skin tone, hair type and treatment area, but the principle is the same: the gap gives new hairs time to enter the growth phase so the next session can catch them. bewell
The First 48 Hours
Straight after treatment, mild redness and a slightly warm or prickly feeling are normal, a bit like light sunburn. This usually settles quickly. In this window:
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise.
- Skip heavily fragranced products and exfoliants on the area.
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin feels dry or tight.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.
Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun after laser hair removal, so keep treated areas covered or use a high-factor SPF. bewell
Days 3 to 7: Settling In
By now most redness has gone. This is a good time to keep skin calm and protected. Carry on with SPF, avoid sunbeds and fake tan, and don’t scratch or pick at the area. If you notice tiny bumps around the hair follicles, they usually fade on their own and shouldn’t be squeezed.
You can shave if you need to. One NHS laser centre advises that you can keep shaving or trimming between treatments, but should not wax, pluck or use depilatory creams. The reason is simple: the laser works on the hair in the follicle, so removing it from the root would leave nothing for the next session to target. nbt
Weeks 1 to 3: The Shedding Phase
This is the stage that confuses many people. Over roughly one to three weeks, treated hairs gradually loosen and shed. They can look like new growth sitting on the skin’s surface, but they are actually hairs on their way out. You might notice them in the shower or when you exfoliate gently. Don’t worry that treatment hasn’t worked. This is a normal and encouraging sign.
During this time:
- Resist plucking the “stubble”. Let it fall out naturally.
- Gentle exfoliation, once your skin is fully settled and your practitioner is happy for you to start, can help loosen shedding hairs.
- Keep moisturising to protect the skin barrier.
Weeks 3 to 6: The Quiet Stretch
Many clients notice a calm patch here, with little visible hair. Don’t be tempted to think you’re finished. Hairs that were resting during your session are still moving through their cycle, and they will begin to appear as they enter the growth phase. Those are exactly the hairs your next session is timed to catch.
This is also when it is easiest to slip into old habits, like waxing for a special occasion. Try to stay consistent, and tell us about any events in your diary so we can plan around them.
The Week Before Your Next Session
A little preparation helps you get the most out of the next appointment:
- Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your session, unless we’ve asked you to do something different.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning in the days beforehand.
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin. Skip moisturiser, perfume and deodorant on the treatment area.
- Tell us about changes, such as new medication, a new skincare product, illness or pregnancy.
How to Track Real Progress
Hair reduction is gradual, so it’s hard to judge from memory. Take a clear photo of each treatment area in similar lighting before every session. Over time you’ll see the pattern clearly: hair that comes back finer, patchier and more slowly. It is worth remembering that there’s no guarantee laser hair removal will remove all the hair, and laser treatment doesn’t work on white or blonde hair. A good clinic will talk honestly about this at your consultation, rather than overpromising. bewellnbt
What If You Miss a Session?
Life happens. A rescheduled appointment doesn’t undo the progress you’ve already made. A longer gap can mean some hairs complete their cycle without being treated, which may stretch your overall course a little. Just get back on track and let us know, and we will adjust your plan.
After Your Course
Once your course is complete, many people find they need only occasional top-ups. The same NHS laser centre notes that many patients have top-up treatments once or twice a year to keep hair well controlled. Your needs may be different, and hormones, age and medication can all play a part. nbt

Ready to Start or Continue Your Course?
If you’re thinking about residents can rely on, or you’d like advice on the weeks between your sessions, we are happy to talk it through. We use a diode laser for hair removal, and every plan starts with a proper consultation. For more general information, you can read about laser hair removal from an NHS laser centre.
